Some older versions of iPads don’t support the Live Loops feature of the new Garageband. Users of these iPads will find our original edition of ‘Teaching Music with Garageband for iPad’ most appropriate. Everyone else should head straight for the second edition of the same textbook.
You can check whether yours does or not by opening a new song on Garageband and looking for this menu, which indicates that you have the Live Loops feature available:
