As part of Drake Music’s 20th Anniversary, Transformance Music’s Ben Sellers has been commissioned to facilitate the creation of a composition ‘written by deaf people, specifically for the enjoyment of other deaf people and the public at large.’
This will be done in a workshop setting, developing a composition based on the myriad ways participants ‘hear’ music, including visually and through vibrations. Text, both spoken and written, and an awareness of the effect of different pitch frequencies of music on hearing aids and cochlear implants, would form elements of the work.
The end product, due to be completed in Spring, will be a high-quality recording for free distribution to deaf organisations around the world, as well as documentation of the compositional process.
