Welcome.

This guide is primarily for teachers working in special education schools, but plenty of it is also useful for

– Teaching assistants
– Carers
– Family & friends

You don’t need to be a musician. You don’t need to have used an iPad before.

iPads come into their own in Special Ed contexts. They are easily adaptable to fit the needs of the user, are multi-sensory, and organise music in new, intuitive ways.

The significant impact that iPad music-making can have on the lives of people with ALN/SEND means that more and more of our work is in this area. This guide starts at the very beginning – which iPad should I buy? What is an app? – and provides information on equipment, functionality and available resources (all free).

A note on terms: We are moving away from using the term ‘Special Educational Needs/Disabilities (SEN/D)’ and towards the term ‘Additional Learning Needs (ALN)’ as we acknowledge that disabled people and people with additional learning needs are two very distinct groups who require different resources and approaches. The bottom line is that most of our resources are engaging for everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities. That is why we have so much fun using them.
